Turnip Inspired Floral Design

Words, Photography and Design by Ashley Bailey

I fell hard for the look of these amazing black turnips as I walked into Whole Foods. I knew I was supposed to be looking for purple but I mean really, how often do you come across black food that isn’t burnt? All I could see in my head were these amazing black turnips that surely when cut open would spill out bloody reds, deep pinks and magnificent purples. I couldn’t have been more wrong. White as snow they were but just as lovely. Don’t ask me what they taste like-I was too busy figuring out how to arrange them with my gorgeous peonies, orchids, greens and wax flower to bother with a taste test. They make me want to eat this yummy arrangement.

A Roasting Revolutionary

So there’s this guy in Athens, Georgia, making a living washing dishes and playing in a band. He could marry his long-term girlfriend and settle down, but that would be too conventional. And when you’re an early twenties dishwashing drummer with an unarticulated dream, you expect more from life.

A lot of stories begin like this and most end shortly thereafter with a bloated and lonely middle-aged man eating Slim Jims and playing World of Warcraft on his mom’s calico sofa. That is, unless you’re Philip Brown.

A Blush Pink and Strawberry Red Love Affair

Growing up, I was surrounded by strawberries, lots of em! They were everywhere, literally, due to my mother quite innocently mentioning how much she liked them. Her simple preference turned out to be the birthplace of an accidental “collection.” EVERYone for seemingly EVERY occasion began to shower strawberry motif gifts on my mother for EVERY single gift giving occasion. It created something of an unexpected, ecclectic strawberry vineyard in our very own home. I, too, was guilty of seeking out and securing every strawberry knick nack imaginable to honor her with, just waiting with anticipation for the next opportune moment to surprise her with another strawberry delight!
