Best of 2012 – Number Nineteen

Cartoon by Ray Goto
Words by Libbie Summers

My husband, Josh, loves to tell jokes. Some times elaborate and most times inappropriate. This is his current favorite. Two simple sentences that pack a big punch. Trust me when I tell you it slays with the food crowd –slays (especially after midnight). I’m giving you the first line and I asked Ray Goto, Professor of Sequential Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, to illustrate the punch line. Prepare to be slayed, confused and slightly disgusted.

So a chicken and an egg are lying in bed together. The chicken turns to the egg and says….

Ray Goto is a cartoonist, illustrator and Professor of Sequential Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design. When he isn’t explaining to his wife (Salted and Styled’s own Andrea Goto) the difference between “Star Wars” and “Star Trek,” he’s teaching their six-year-old daughter how to throw a curve ball.

A Life Inspired by Corn and Love

BACKSTORY: Geoffrey doesn’t like anyone to know the actual spelling of his name, and prefers the less bourgeois “Jeff” (his pedigree determined years ago in a wealthy Chicago suburb). Jeff’s great grandfather, grandfather and father all held seats on the Chicago Board of Exchange and were not pleased when he decided to apply to Agriculture School at The University of Illinois (a state school). Jillian (Jeff’s young wife) studied art at a lesser known art school in the Mid-West where she met Jeff at a summer party in Saugatuck, MI. When everyone else was wearing notable designers, Jillian arrived at the party wearing a simple white cotton sheath with a small noticeable tear at the hem.

Honey Colored Glasses

I came across this wonderful vintage amber glass compote and immediately thought of The Savannah Bee Company and those delicious honeycombs. My friend, Savannah caterer Susan Mason, has travelled miles with them in tow to me here in Texas. The compote truly is the color of honey, especially in the right light. I filled this delicious dish with luscious tree peonies made of supple petals and beds of pollen, clematis so sweet no bee could resist, scented geranium, garden roses, carnations and amazing Oriental poppies for a final sting.
