Backyard Chicken Farmers: Kirby Wheat and Trae Gurley
This week we salute all ages of the backyard chicken farmers who inspire us. We applaud the thread of seriousness that flows through each farmer and the realization that no two farmers are alike. Take a peek through the chicken wire each day to see what’s up in the coop and under the poop.
My dad grew up on a farm in the Northwestern-most part of Washington State. He and his two brothers rose early every morning to feed the livestock, milk the cows and bale hay. Dad resented almost every minute except when he was tipping cows or tying makeshift parachutes around the farm cats and tossing them from the barn’s loft.
If we take “an apple a day”, certainly one requires frequent doses of watermelon. It guarantees a rush of summer; a taste representing the whir of bicycle tires, crickets’ chirps, the site of rocky beaches, the smell of lake-wet towels, and the dizzy of a swing with the tallest, most handsome at the town dance.
