The Perfect Flower for Mom

May 7, 2012

The ranunculus is everything my Mother is:

Beautiful – So beautiful, in fact, I had this amazing flower inked on my ankle many years ago.

Confident – Standing tall and proud in a sea of other blooms.

Brilliant – The amazingly vibrant color is blinding at times.

Independent – All you need is a bunch of ranunculus and dreams are made.

Strong – These heavy headed flowers have strong stems to support them.

For a wonderful Mother from an appreciative daughter, I hope you see a little bit of you in this arrangement. I hope that I can be the Mother to Byrd that you have been to me. Happy Mother’s Day with love.

Ashley Bailey, owner and founder of  The Byrd Collective, has a varied design background  with a strong focus on floral and event design. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, she left home for Austin to study art history and art at The University of Texas. After living in Houston and NYC, she then headed to the Deep South, by way of Savannah, Georgia, to work as the Director of Events at SCAD. It was there, inspired by the creative energy, eccentric personalities, and gifted artists, that Ashley started creating The Byrd Collective.

The Byrd Collective is a floral design studio based in Austin, Texas. With a loose and laid-back aesthetic, Ashley creates floral designs that are the epitome of romantic-soft, lush, and just a touch wild. When Ashley isn’t contributing to Camillestyles.com, snapping photos on Instagram, or creating living art, you can find her holding her 20 pound 5 month old son, loving on her independent 4 year old daughter, spoiling her 5 year old dog, and thanking her Cross Fit obsessed husband for choosing her.

Ashley’s Floral Props: Container found at the Austin Antique Mall…it never disappoints. My mom will love using this again and again!

Too Much Fruit

One of the many good things about living south of the Mason Dixon line is the ability to be a citrus farmer…if only in your backyard. My current home in Savannah is no exception. On this modest yard overlooking the Forrest River, there grows one yellow grapefruit tree, 2 orange trees, and one clementine tree.

Lace Between Seasons

I’m loving this week’s muse, lace and layering…Perfect combo and inspiration for the season right now. The season I am referring to is that “in between” season of not knowing what to wear. Is it winter? Is it Spring? Or wait.. Is it that season known to the fashion world as Resort? If you live in the South, you have even more inquiries..

Pork Belly Gyros

For a stretch of four years, I was lucky enough to be a resident on the Greek island of Mykonos for a couple of months each year. I’d go to recharge my creative batteries, drink some ouzo, dive for sea urchin roe, and sleep. Standing on the edge of the cerulean blue Aegean Sea and overlooking the tan bodies of Grecian Gods in Speedos, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. Of course, as nourishing as all that introspection was for my soul, this girl needed to eat. And that’s when I discovered a Mykonian gyro. I’d had gyros before. I bought one off a food cart in New York, ate a gut bomb from the county fair, and worse yet, ordered a gyro from some Midwestern chain where my server referred to it as a “gee-RO.” Anywhere you live, someone’s making some trashy gyro, but I’m here to tell you that there ain’t no gyro like a gyro in Greece.
