Seeing Red

March 31, 2012

Lipstick, I love. Now, finding the perfect RED lipstick is an extended amount of love and gratification I feel when I first meet eye to lip with one. My muse this week, radishes along with their many shades of red, inspired my search for finding the perfect tone red lipstick.

how radishing

The majority of families don’t “do” radishes but mine historically has and does. At six, I carried the nickname – my first, last and only as far as I know – “Miss Radishes” for the color of my once rosy cheeks and maybe for the fact that I hosted such a garden in the hopes that Peter Rabbit would make an appearance.

Somedays a girl just has to say no to meat. Luckily those days don’t come often.

I have always loved radishes and their earthy, peppery flavor. So cool, so crisp and so refreshing in a ginormous spring salad (the only kind I like). Really, I have a weakness for any root vegetable but this week I am putting the focus on the so often overlooked radish. I am sure the future will allow for more talk of my other favorite and rooterrific veggies.

The Unredeemed Radish

March 27, 2012

I’ve never met a vegetable I didn’t like, at least not one I couldn’t make more palatable by bathing in butter, showering in salt or layering in liquid cheese. That is, until I met the radish. She came into my life somewhat unexpectedly, showing up in my dinner salad—her dusty, magenta skin and bright white meat a stark contrast to the sickly green manger of iceberg lettuce and sliced celery on which she rested.

Inspired by Radishes

Simple and subdued at first glance –a fan of green at dirt level. Really nothing to make you turn your head, but, beneath a blanket of soil lies the showy colors of a spring radish. Reds, purples, pinks and whites –painted with the same brush used by a celebrity rabbit. This week on Salted and Styled, we celebrate the peppered beauty of a simple radish.

The Life of a Dandelion

March 25, 2012

Driving along the many pastures on the long country road that lead to my childhood home in Mississippi, I learned early on to recognize certain flowers that preceded the onset of summer. There was one spot (right by that heavy metal gate that I dreaded having to get off my three-wheeler to open) where I knew to watch for the annual sea of dandelion blooms.

Waxing On About Love and Dandelions

Try to imagine being a child again where you saw each dandelion as an opportunity and not merely a landscaping nuisance. Remember back to the time when you would rush at the chance to pluck one with its head of white bursts between your chubby little fingers, fill your cheeks like billowing sails to blow, blow the top clear off sending shining white puffs into the sky.

just dandy

Due to the shape of its leaves, named for the teeth of lions (dents de lion in French), the hardy dandelion grows pervasively over the entire globe and counts as one of nature’s most efficacious liver cleansers.

Drink up, ye dandies!
